Tips to Beginning the First Period Discussion #KotexMom

July 25, 2012 by NYCSingleMom Filed Under: Single Mom Daily Life

Kotex products for teens As I mentioned in an earlier post,  U by Kotex Tween Ambassador, my mother never talked about sex, my period or anything controversial for that matter. Totally generational and cultural, the Japanese are not exactly known for their openness.   As a U by Kotex Mom Ambassador, I am excited to have the conversation with my daughter  but scared as well. In the last few weeks, I have been on the kotex.com/tween  site a lot prepping for The Talk.

Here are my Tips to Begin the First Period Discussion:

  • Prepare for the talk – Pick a day and prepare for the conversation. My daughter is pretty savvy and is quite inquisitive. I seriously think I am more concerned that she is going to ask a question I won’t be able to answer. One of my two favorite pages at kotex.com/tween to help me prepare and put me in the mindset for potential questions were My First Period Q&A and Questions She May Ask. Definitely check them out.
  •  Get the right product for her – I love the  new U by Kotex Tween products which are  smaller and give all the same protection as regular pads. Admittedly, I like that they come in all these  vibrant new colors and patterns that will appeal to tween girls.
  • Prepare a Kit for her First Period – Because you never know when it will happen, I suggest preparing a kit of  U by Kotex Tween pads, wipes, underwear. Buy a cute “make-up” bag to keep all the supplies in. Once you have the talk about her getting her first period, show her how to use the products so she will be prepared. And of course, make sure she has the kit with her so she is not caught off guard when her first period happens.
  • Look for a Casual Moment for The Talk  – Sometimes the best moments are the impromptu or casual moments in your daughter’s life. Going to school, a play date, on the way to class or another moment where you seem to talk about her day.
  • Provide additional information – Every girl is different but it may be a good idea to buy a book so she can refer to it after your talk and point her to the U by Kotex/helloperiod  web site which is a wealth of information.

Definitely check out the   www.kotex.com/tween for more information. Do you have any tips for talking to your daughters about their first period? For those who have The Talk already,  where there any questions that came up that you were surprised by?

Disclosure: I wrote this review while participating in a Brand Ambassador Campaign by Mom Central Consulting on behalf of U by Kotex Tween and received products to facilitate my post and a promotional item to thank me for taking the time to participate.”
