Now, in its second smash year, Broadway’s musical comedy hit How to Succeed in Business without Really Trying welcomes a bright new star—music sensation and Broadway alum, NICK JONAS (Les Misérables, Beauty and the Beast, Annie Get Your Gun)! You’ll delight to his riotous rise up the corporate ladder as he struggles to juggle the promotion, the corner office and—of course—the girl.
Joining him are Emmy Award® winner BEAU BRIDGES, (Brothers and Sisters, The Fabulous Baker Boys), MICHAEL URIE (Ugly Betty), TAMMY BLANCHARD (Life with Judy Garland) and ROSE HEMINGWAY in this charming production that The New Yorker calls “a first-rate, high-stepping musical! This show is luminous!”
I will admit that my daughter was far more excited to see Nick Jonas after seeing him sing in an small intimate concert last year and meeting and interview his mom, Denise Jonas in How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying than I was. That said, I really enjoyed the play and for me this is a ringing endorsement because I really don’t like musicals. Nick Jonas as “Finch” was totally competent, charismatic and was working really hard throughout the show which is pretty impressive for a 22 year old to carry a show of this magnitude. Now I will admit, Jonas has good voice but not a great one but that’s okay because he is quite memorizing as a performer.
The supporting cast was good, enjoyable and pleasant to watch. Beau Bridges as J. B. Biggley, the head of World Wide Wicket was good and funny in moments but not laughing on the floor funny. Rose Hemingway squeaky little voice as the secretary who sets her cap for Ponty was lovely. Michael Urie, who plays Ponty’s rival (and the boss’s nephew), is a natural comedian with perfect comedic timing. My daughter loved his whole routine as did I.
For parents of kids under 10, take note that the website that this is a show for all ages, I would disagree. My daughter is almost nine and I thought there were a few scenes that were a “tad” risqué and frankly inappropriate. There is a reference “to making love”; a va va boom secretary who all the men “love”; a few curse words and a main character who has a mistress. Again, my daughter with the exception of being shocked at the curse words, she missed all the other inappropriate references.
Would I recommend it? Yes, it was a lot fun, the songs are catchy and the cast is wonderful
