Actress, Comedienne, Author, Talk Show Host, Friend, Wife and Mom, Sherri Shepherd wears a lot of hats but you can add, funny and honest interviewee. Recently, I had the pleasure of interviewing Sherri and as much I wanted to believe she would be the typical celebrity interview (boring), her interviewing style is pretty much what you see on The View.
Just to give you some background, I was originally asked if wanted to have a Skype style interview and unfortunately, I had to cancel. I took a chance, sent my questions and asked if or when she had time, could Sherri pick whichever questions she wanted and shoot them back to me.
I was surprised that her publicist requested if we could just have a phone interview. Okay, surprised is probably not the word I would use, I honestly thought by sending the questions, her publicist would just answer the questions and shoot them back to me. Wrong.
When I started the interview, Sherri admitted that she started to answer the questions herself and said to her publicist, “Can’t I just do a phone interview, wouldn’t that be easier?”
When she admitted this to me, I thought okay, Sherri is not just a celebrity who delegates everything and she wanted to talk to me Woohoo!! I don’t profess to know any celebrities, personally and I am like every other person who reads People, thinks that it takes a village to help celebrities run their lives so again just surprised.
So onto the interview.
What is a typical morning for you before The View taping begins?
“Jeffrey wakes me up around 5:30 and that’s when my day starts. I make him oatmeal and smashed bananas, just right and get him ready for school. I have to be at work at 9. Elizabeth and I walk in around around 9:05, always the late ones which is because Grace or Jeffrey made us late. We do hot topics from 9 – 9:40 am, where get a lively conversation whether it’s political, celebrities. If we get passionate about something, someone will say don’t overtalk it because then we won’t have anything to say during the segment. We won’t repeat the same things when we get downstairs, all the while we are getting ready in hair and make-up. Research is pulled, facts figure. Live at 11am. They mic us and it goes by quickly. We laugh, we joke during the commercial break
“What I love about these ladies is that they are very respectful of each other. No one is trying to change anybody’s mind. It’s like a big family, you fight, you argue but you love each other. We don’t fake it. Its very hard to fake it, if we did it wouldn’t last.”
What do you do to take time to get time for yourself given your schedule?
“I did not have anybody to call, my mom passed away. I called Elizabeth because she had kids but she is busy as well. When he was in school, or at an activity, I would be in the corner doing something and look up every once and awhile and yell “Go Jeffrey.” I never got a lot of sleep so when he goes to sleep, those are the times when I have time to myself.”
“Elizabeth and I email each other at one o’clock in the morning. It’s really hard to carve out those moments.”
What is your favorite activity to do with your son since you moved to New York?
“We love riding our bikes together. I try to incorporate my workout with my time. He will climb the monkey bars and so will I.”
“My favorite moment is reading to him at night. He nestles up to me, its the best part of the day, its somehting I have to do for me. My mother used to do it and still remember those moms and if I can create those memories for him.”
How come we don’t see any paparrazi photos of you? I
“I am so under the radar. I go out without my wig, no glamour. Poeple are very respectful of you especially when I am with Jeffrey.”
What foundation do you use?
“My stylist uses MAC and RCMA Shinto line.”
What’s next for you?
“I have a new season of the Newlywed Game is coming back I will be in a movie with Katherine Heigl, “One for the Money” and I am working with Steve Harvey in movie based on his book, Think Like a Man, Act Like a Lady.” I have something big coming up but can’t talk about now.”
Sherri Shepherd has also recently partnered with Oral-B and is calling on power toothbrush users across the country to share their “powerful moment of truth” — that instant when they switched from a manual to a power toothbrush. As I mentioned, it was a truly delightful interview and certainly, I hope I have the opportunity to do an on-camera interview with Sherri because it was really was like chatting with a friend.
