Tips to Keep Healthy During Vacation
As someone who is constantly monitoring her weight, vacations can derail all my hard work. My ultimate goal is not to lose weight but to stay fit and healthy while I am away from home. Just remember, it’s not all about exercising to staying healthy. Here are 6 ways to help you healthy and fit while on vacation.
- Check to see if the hotel has a gym or pool or walking/running trails. I am an early riser, so if you get up before your kids and hit the gym or walk for thirty minutes, you will be done and not worry about trying to get a work out later when you just want to relax from your day.
- Bring energy bars or other healthy snacks. Not only will you be less tempted to snack but you save money by not buying expensive treats at the airport or at the hotel.
- Don’t forget to drink lots of water. That will keep you full and hydrated especially during the summer months.
- Limit your alcohol! It’s a vacation so I indulge in a glass of wine which is fine, it’s when you start drinking early and don’t stop until it’s bedtime. And remember, the more you drink, the more you will have a tendency to eat more.
- Be mindful of your food choices. You are on vacation and who wants to be on a diet. Not me. But you can still enjoy a good meal everyday just don’t have a good meal at all every meal. Have a small breakfast, salad at lunch and enjoy your dinner.
- Keep track of what you eat. This one is probably the hardest to keep because who wants to keep track of their calories on vacation. But it’s worth the effort to keep notes while you are making notes in your travel journal. Again, it’s being mindful of your food choices.
- Print the menus from hotel restaurants – Again, speaks to the mindful eating. I take a quick gander while on the plane so I don’t lose control when I am in the moment.
I have found that along with planning my vacation itinerary, if I map out meal and workout plan, I do much better. Again, we are on vacation to lose weight, the goal is to maintain and not gain weight.
Have a tip, let us know and I will add it to the list and credit you.
Happy Vacation!!

Great tips! I also sometimes bring my own tea bags (I love green tea) so that I can stay with my routine (healthy drink/hydration). Also sometimes when we travel, we save a ton of money and eat healthier if we stay at a hotel that has a kitchenette (and bring our own food or run to a local grocery store).

Tea Bags that is a great idea. You are right, the hotels never have great tea or enough of it.

Hi I’m not sure I’m at the right place to comment about the story I read about staying healthy while on vacation. I just wanted to say, I been takeing my snacks and drinks with me for some time now. Even during football season when I go to a party at some one elses house. It always surprises me at how many people comment on what a good idea it is to bring my own healthy snacks. Usually I set a new trend and the next time I see them they’re doing the same thing. Thank you for the great information.

Great tips. I’d also suggest taking your usual vitamins and supplements while on vacation to keep your immune system level.
Safe travels this summer.
