Big Hero 6 is the newest film from the folks at Disney. Inspired by the Marvel comics of the same name, and featuring comic-book style action, “Big Hero 6” is directed by Don Hall (“Winnie the Pooh”) and Chris Williams (“Bolt”), and produced by Roy Conli (“Tangled”). The Disney team has truly created two unique worlds with unique characters that is sure to appeal to kids of all ages and I mean adults, too.
Big Hero 6 is an action-packed comedy-adventure about robotics prodigy Hiro Hamada, who learns to harness his genius—thanks to his brilliant brother Tadashi and their like-minded friends: adrenaline junkie Go Go Tomago, neatnik Wasabi, chemistry whiz Honey Lemon and fanboy Fred. When a devastating turn of events catapults them into the midst of a dangerous plot unfolding in the streets of San Fransokyo, Hiro turns to his closest companion—a robot named Baymax—and transforms the group into a band of high-tech heroes determined to solve the mystery.
5 Reasons to See Big Hero 6
- San Fransokyo, the fictional setting of the movie is mix of two amazing and recognizable cities but it totally designed authentic and believable city. I love that the film makers integrated iconic sites from both cities into San Fransokyo. For kids, who have never been to either city, it’s a teachable moment for them to learn about both cities and all those instantly recognizable sites.
- Not just for kids – I love animated movies that are not dumb downed for kids and thereby exclude teens and adults. I was at a screening with twenty somethings and you could tell by the laughter that they got it. If you don’t have kids, do not be scared off that it’s an animated movie, you will love it.
3. Asian lead character – about damn time I say. While there is no mention of Tadashi Hamada’s ethnicity, it is quite obvious he is Japanese-American.
4. Multi-Culti cast – again kudos to Disney. Nerds are not all white men nor Asian and this is pretty obvious from the Hiro Hamada’s university friends who include conservative, dreadlocked Wasabi (voiced by Damon Wayons), GoGo Tamago (Jamie Chung), chemistry whiz Honey Lemon (Genesis Rodriguez) and fanboy Fred (T.J. Miller.)
5. Big Hero 6 Plot – it has all elements you want in any movie – drama, comedy, action, witty dialogue, villains and a lovable, heartfelt hero.
6. Baymax – without Baymax this movie obviously doesn’t work but his character is so well-written. How does Disney do it? Create characters our kids will be quoting long into their teens. And P.S. I am sure your child will want a Baymax anything for Christmas.
Can you tell I love this movie? I so recommend this movie for kids, tweens, teens and adults alike. I have to make note that at my screening, it was mostly 20 somethings and wow, they laughed during the movie and after the movie, I overheard the comments about how great the movie was.
Finally, please note that like most Disney movies, there is a bit of sadness (hint: Bambi) that might not sit well with younger kids.
