School is about to begin for most of the country but New York City kids go back to school September 9. Yes, September 9. (that is a post for another day.)
The problem with the late start date is that all the camps end in mid-August which means parents have to scramble to figure out what to do with their kids until school starts in September.
5 Activities to celebrate summer’s last hurrah and Back to School!
1. Create a scrapbook or photobook – Review all the photos you took over the summer and choose photos for the scrapbook. This is the perfect time to bond and reminisce about the summer. Don’t forget to include ticket stubs and other memorabilia.
2. Do something silly. Set up a tent and ‘camp’ in the backyard. Of course, if you live in the city in an apartment like I do, you have to improvise. My daughter likes to set up a tent in her room and we bring the camping indoors. We make s’mores, sit in the tent with a flashlight, tell scary stories and play games. So much fun.
3. Backwards Day – This is one of my favorite activities because it’s super simple to execute. Have dinner for breakfast (pizza anyone?) and pancakes, eggs and bacon for dinner, so little effort and so much fun.
4. Go for a Mani/Pedi – What’s not to love about this activity? It’s relaxing, it’s a treat and most of all, a great bonding experience. Of course, if you have a boy, this won’t work so why not head to the movies or download a old movie to watch together.
5. Plan a last hurrah – There is always one activity I am planning to do but never get to so why not make it your last hurrah! This year, we are going to Governor’s Island.
What’s your last hurrah before school begins?

We are the opposite here, we have a very early start date. My kids have been back to school since August 7. These are all such fun ideas for back-to-school celebrations. My kids are teenagers now but they would’ve loved doing the tent party when they were younger.

Love those… except a mani/pedi wouldn’t work since my little guy is the one going back to school… ha, ha, ha… We do go and spend a special day together, with some much needed QT!

Ah, I used to do a mani/pedi with my mom before going back to school! I can’t wait until my daughter is old enough for that tradition. 🙂
