My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2 Cast Interview
My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2, finally hits the big screen after 14 years. The sequel is the long-awaited follow-up to the highest-grossing romantic comedy and I couldn’t be more excited as it is one of my favorite comedies of all time.
Interviewing the cast and director including Nia Vardalos (Toula); John Corbett (Ian); Andrea Martin (Aunt Voula); Joey Fatone (cousin Angel) and newcomer Elena Kampouris (Toula and Ian’s daughter Paris) and Director Kirk Jones on the making of the movie was a fun and hilarious interview. Sometimes the words can’t express how the entire cast was a joy to interview and was so down to earth and just plain laugh out funny.
Academy Award® nominee Nia Vardalos
John Corbett returns as Toula’s non-Greek and cool husband Ian
- Joey Fatone who plays a cousin Angelo has a critical and dramatic plot point in the movie (sorry no spoilers) was handed the script the day before the reading about the plot twist. He was worried and questioned, “Do I die?” And when he found out, he was thrilled for the opportunity given that many people never see his non-comedy side offering that he was able to draw on real life experience of a friend.
- Even though Andrea Martin (Aunt Voula) has quite the body of work since the first movie came out, people still come up to her trying her to coax do to one of her iconic lines “What do you mean you don’t eat meat?”
- Andrea Martin‘s character Aunt Voula is based on Martin’s Armenian aunt who like her screen character is a “fixer” and carried herself with great confidence and is quite proud of assimilating herself in the American culture. And yes, she had the white streak in her hair.
- If you are a fan of the movie and see the My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2, you would think with a comedic star like Andrea Martin that she improvised many of her lines. That would be wrong. Martin mentioned that all the lines are actually in the script.
- According to Nia Vardalos who admitted that it took a long time for her to be mom, it wasn’t until the first day of kindergarten when she was crying so hard that other moms backed away and somebody said, in 13 years they will be going to off to college that she realized it was time for her to write the sequel.
- The script took Vardalos four years to complete because in the middle she wrote a book “Instant Mom.”
- Nia Vardalos described when some scenes were run by her mom, ones she described as pushing the envelope. Most of the ones her mom said “no” to she kept and turned out to some of the funniest scenes in the movie.
- John Corbett talked about recreating the magic of the first film and how the sequel is such a feel-good movie because that’s what people are craving.
- Director Kirk Jones acknowledged that there is plenty of dark movies being made and that’s fine but there is nothing wrong in investing time in making movies that make people feel good and touch on human subjects
- Jones admitted that he had no intention of being “in control”, all he wanted was to make sure the cast was guided towards a place emotionally and comically that they had 15 years ago.
- Newcomer Elena Kampouris who plays the daughter Paris admitted that her last name means hunchback in Greek. Like her movie grandfather Gus (Michael Constatine) who thinks Windex cures everything, her own father version to cure everything is olive oil.
- Kampouris is not always followed by her family like her screen character but she mentioned that all the relatives who live on the tiny Greek island of Kasos will be attending the premiere of the movie.
