Epic Funny Men Interview -Aziz Ansari & Chris O’Dowd #EpicTheMovie @EpicTheMovie

I was invited to an interview roundtable with Aziz Ansari and Chris O’Dowd directly following my own Epic Red Carpet appearance.
Aziz Ansari (Mub) and Chris O’Dowd (Grub are the two funny men who play a slug and a snail respectively. Let’s face it, in every kids movie, there has to be comedic sidekicks that make all of us bust a gut as they say and Mub and Grub provide Epic’s funny side.

During the interview, you could see why these two actors were chosen by Queen Tara to watch over the new pod that will eventually take over the pond from the current queen. For those not familiar with the two actors.
Aziz Ansari stars on NBC’s Parks and Recreation with Amy Poehler playing her self-serving colleague, Tom Haverford. He is probably best known for his stand-up and college comedy tours (seriously go on to you tube, he is truly hilarious.)

Chris O’Dowd came to the attention of American movie goers as Kristin Wiig’s boyfriend in Bridesmaids and for you, HBO Girl’s fans, you will remember him as the very rich Thomas John who marries and divorces Jessa.

The interview with Aziz and Chris provided several insights into how an animated film is made and their comedic turns in Epic.

Q: From my perspective, I was interested in finding out if they had done any research on their respective characters before recording began.

Aziz was quite clear he had not, “No, I didn’t really do any research. They have a piece of paper that has a script, lines on it and then I go in there and I say those lines.” And Chris kiddingly remarked, “I had a slug farm, so I felt like I was already a step ahead.”

Q: Did you work together or separate or half and half?

Aziz: “We did the first main session together and then we both were traveling around for our different film commitments.” Funny man Aziz remarked that “PitBull did all of his in Miami in a club while he was performing. It was really hard, really hard for the audio people.” (Aziz was kidding, I don’t want to start any rumours.)

Q: Did you know what you would like on the screen?

Aziz: ‘Yes, early on they give you the concept art and what the character’s going to look like. By the time you are done, you see the fully animated stuff. That’s one of the cool parts of the process, seeing how it evolves and comes together.”

Much of the rest of the interview session was totally hilarious and very much impromptu which no words can really describe. During the interview, Aziz corrected a blogger who called them slugs, “Technically, Chris is a snail” while Chris riffed on how “I thought I was playing Queen Tara until I saw the movie” and Aziz responded “Chris’ accent did not test well.”

From their “chemistry” on screen and at the interview, you would think that the actors were long lost friends but in fact this is the first time they have worked together and as Chris told us that two had actually met at a couple of Halloween parties over the years. Now that is one party I would like to be invited to.
