Tim Burton, famed director of Alice in Wonderland and The Nightmare Before Christmas introduces his newest creation “Frankenweenie,” a touching tale about a boy and his dog.
After unexpectedly losing his beloved dog Sparky, young Victor harnesses the power of science to bring his best friend back to life—with just a few minor adjustments. He tries to hide his home-sewn creation, but when Sparky gets out, Victor’s fellow students, teachers and the entire town all learn that getting a new “leash on life” can be monstrous.
Here are some fun Tim Burton did you know trivia about Frankenweenie?
- The voice cast includes four actors who worked with Burton on previous films: Winona Ryder (“Beetlejuice,” “Edward Scissorhands”), Catherine O’Hara (“Beetlejuice,” “The Nightmare Before Christmas”), Martin Short (“Mars Attacks!”) and Martin Landau (“Ed Wood,” Sleepy Hollow”).
- When Tim Burton originally conceived the idea for “Frankenweenie,” he envisioned it as a full-length, stop-motion animated film. Due to budget constraints, he instead directed it as a live-action short, released in 1984.
- Several of the character names—Victor, Elsa Van Helsing, Edgar “E” Gore and Mr. Burgemeister— were inspired by classic horror films.
The overall look and feel of the movie is totally “Tim Burton “and I thought the use of black and white stop motion fit with the story.
Now of course the movie is inspired by numerous black and white horror movies like the 1931 “Frankenstein” starring Boris Karloff. For me this provides me with the perfect opportunity to introduce one of the truly classic movies of all time to my daughter because as you can imagine, this generation considers black and white movies “old” and “not cool” so thanks to Tim Burton for making black and white movies cool to a younger generation.
Would I recommend Tim Burton’s Frankenweenie? Yes, anyone who has lost a loved one will identify with Victor and will be touched by his not wanting to let go of Sparky. That said, I recommend this movie for kids 8 or 9 and above as I think if your child is easily frightened than this is not the movie for them. It is definitely a dark movie that deals with death and spoiler alert: reanimated pets turn into monsters that terrorize the town which could be intense and scary for lower grade schoolers.

You will love it, just because it’s animated doesn’t means its a kids movie.
