The idea of having an ice cream at an old-fashioned soda shop was something we could not pass up and so thrilled that we made the effort to go to Franklin Fountain located in Old City. Once you enter Franklin Fountain, you will transported back in time ala Back to the Future to a Art Nouveau style decor ice cream shop, complete with “soda jerks” wearing white shirts, bow-tied look.
The menu includes Egg Creams, phosphates (I have no idea what a phosphate or egg cream are but I am going to assume they are from times past,) banana splits, and a multitude of ice cream flavors from vanilla to cotton candy. And for dieters and lactose intolerant, don’t worry, there is ice cream for you. My daughter opted for Dr. Dovey Classic Banana Split. OMG, the Dr. Dovey Classic Banana Split is your traditional banana split with vanilla, chocolate and strawberry ice cream topped with home-made whipped cream, nuts, chocolate sauce and cherries. Thank god, we only ordered one because it’s big enough for three people but boy was it just the best and most delicious banana split I have ever had. And why not the ice cream is home-made and made with freshest ingredients.
Truly worth the trip and leave the credit cards, Franklin Fountain only takes cash.
Location: Franklin Fountain, 116 Market Street in Old City Philadelphia.
