Looking for cool technology things to do but don’t want to pay a lot to do it, then head to the Sony Wonder Technology Lab located at the Sony Plaza Atrium (550 Madison Avenue.)

This FREE four-story interactive technology and entertainment museum allows techies, young and old, the opportunity to learn and play in a wide – range of fun activities that will keep you engaged for hours.

NYC Single Mom lists Top Ten Things to Do at The Sony Wonder Technology Lab Top: 

  1. Log In  – When you arrive, you log into the SWTL experience by setting up your account, including your name, adding your favorite color, musical genre,  picture and voice. This Digital Profile is used to personalize the exhibit experiences that follow. This is a fun way to begin the visiting the exhibit. 
  2. SWTL Community Diagram – After you set up a Digital Profile, your digital profile will be seen on a large, real-time projected 3D diagram of SWTL. This is amazing that you can see yourself in relationship to other visitors in the museum.
  3. In the Game – Gamers will be able to test certain PlayStation 3 games in one of three alcoves equipped with cool hi-def displays, floors that vibrate and surround sound video.
  4. Music Mixer – Let your budding music producer lose in this highly interactive experience that allows visitors to add their own spin to AliciaKeys song. They will be able to add instrument track in a variety of musical genres from Hip-Hop to World and create a whole new mix song.  Fantastic way for them to learn about characteristics  of different instruments and musical styles.
  5. Moviemaker – This exhibit teaches visitors about some of the key concepts of motion picture production and digital editing. Visitors will be able to create their own movie trailer by choosing from a series of short video clips and putting them in order. How cool!
  6. Robot Zone – Want to know how robots, think, sense and act? The Robot Zone allows visitors to program one of six colored robots that are equipped with light and touch sensors to determine how they will act. Then they can move the robots around the robot arena.
  7. Dance Motion Capture – This was our favorite exhibit. You can have your body and dance moves captured and then performed by Sony animated characters in  dynamic motion capture experience. This is one that your kids will want to do more than once and you will too.
  8. Virtual Surgery – Want to fell what it’s like to perform open heart surgery? The Virtual Surgery exhibit allows visitors through a haptic controller experience the physical sensations associated with various surgical instruments and products while they operate on a virtual patient. Another favorite for my daughter.
  9. WSWL Production Studio – This is a fun way for your kids and you to explore the roles associated with a television production. Visitors perform as a team to create an HD broadcast.
  10. HD Theater – Want to see feature films and children’s features in a what is basically an amazing 73 seat hi-defintion, 5.1 Dolby Digital Surround Sound theater? This is for you and all free. From classic, most recently issued movies to kids movies, you are sure to find a movie. Visit sonywondertechlab.com for current movie schedule.

  • Reservations are recommended as there are very few same day tickets available.
  • Go early and try not to visit during school breaks or July/August when t’s get super busy.
