This week, I went to see The Firework Maker’s Daughter playing at The New Victory Theater. The play is a new chamber opera based on the novel by Philip Pullman. The Firework Maker’s Daughter tells the story of a young girl named Lila and her quest to master Crackle Dragons, Leaping Monkeys and Golden Sneezes as a firework maker like her father.
There is much to like about this performance from the imaginative staging, to the bits of humor, the use of Balinese shadow puppetry and beautiful singing from the cast. My daughter and her friend were enthralled by the show. And I would recommend the show for ages 6 and up. I wish there was a tad more editing as I did think it ran a little long.
