During the D23 Expo, I had the pleasure to be entertained by a 32-piece orchestra celebrating the Silly Symphony animated short films and their accompanying music hosted by film historian Leonard Maltin.
What makes this concert so special is that concert goers were able to watch selected Silly Symphony shorts from the Disney’s archives while the music was performed live in synchronization with the picture. And the music was performed as it would have been recorded during those historic days at the Disney Studios on Hyperion Avenue in the 1920s and ‘30s.
There were many animated shorts that obviously I had not seen but still enjoyed it for its creativity and often times humorous antics. The shorts that stood out for me were The Three Little Pigs, and the first Silly Symphony, The Skeleton Dance. Both were memorable for the animation and the accompanying music.
The Skeleton Dance is one of the most iconic films in the series, features music by Carl Stalling and animation by Disney Legend Ub Iwerks.
This is one of those once in a lifetime moments for lovers of film and music. The Silly Symphony was filled with some of the best musicians in the city and it showed, just world class music all the way.
