About Loving The Movie
From acclaimed writer/director Jeff Nichols, Loving celebrates the real-life courage and commitment of an interracial couple, Richard and Mildred Loving (portrayed by Joel Edgerton and Ruth Negga), who married and then spent the next nine years fighting for the right to live as a family in their hometown. Their civil rights case, Loving v. Virginia, went all the way to the Supreme Court, which in 1967 reaffirmed the very foundation of the right to marry – and their love story has become an inspiration to couples ever since.
Without a doubt, I think Loving will be in Oscar contention in 2017. It is an extremely moving, well-acted, engaging and uplifting movie about a historical moment in our country.
That said, what comes across is that two people who are in love can’t figure out why they can’t just live their lives and be married. It shows that two people who basically are nobodies living in the Virginia country can actually impact over time hundreds of thousands of people.
I will admit that the movie does move a bit slow because there is a lot to get through but without the two leads Joel Edgerton and Ruth Negga, this would be a humdrum movie. They both play their characters to the core. Edgarton like the real life Richard Loving was a quiet man who loved his wife and eschewed the limelight. Ruth Negga as Mildred Loving performance was much more subtle although wasn’t sure if she smiled so much and was so agreeable because that’s what women of color did back then or she did it because she didn’t know what they were embarking on.
No matter, I think women will love this movie and find it empowering because she is the one who wants to be able to return to Virginia and takes the initiative to write Robert F. Kennedy, the Attorney General about their situation. This is actually a missing piece of the movie which I am sure would have added an extra 10 minutes to the movie but I would love to have understood why Kennedy sent her letter to the ACLU to handle rather than just ignoring it. There had to have been some reason, right.
Loving is worth seeing for the fine performances of Joel Edgerton and Ruth Negga, moving moments that will inspire you and restore your faith in love.
