After walking the Epic Red Carpet and previewing the movie, my fellow journalists and I sat down with the stars of the movie Amanda Seyfried (M.K.), Colin Farrell (Ronin) along with director Chris Wedge to chat about their participation in the movie.
After meeting with Amanda Seyfried, Colin Farrell and Chris Wedge, I had a hilarious sit down with Chris O’Dowd and Aziz Ansari.
Amanda Seyfried is a familiar face to many movie goers as one of the stars of Mammia Mia! and Les Miserables. I have been a big fan of Ms. Seyfried since her big break in one of my favorite movies of all time, the Tina Fey dramedy, Mean Girls. As for Colin Farrell, I have been following his career since his break out role in Joel Schumacher’s Tigerland and enjoyed some of his most memorable performances in such movies as Horrible Bosses, Miami Vice and Minority Report and look forward to his role in Saving Mr. Banks with Tom Hanks.
What I really liked about the group interview with Amanda, Colin and Chris is that the participants seemed to play off each other during the interviews. And as an interviewer, it’s lot less pressure for me versus a one on one interview setting.
5 Things I Learned at the Interview with Amanda Seyfried, Colin Farrell and Chris Wedge:
1. Amanda and Colin were never in the studio together and Amanda made that quite clear when she introduced herself and shook Colin’s hand at the interview and kidded him about “being excited to meet her. “ Funny and cute!
2. This is Colin’s first foray into animated features so I was curious as to why he was making the leap into his first family oriented movie since his body of work is so not family friendly. Good question!
Colin’s response was “Opportunity, really, to be honest with you. Unless you’re writing your own material and producing your own work, which I’m not yet, but you go off, as a working actor, an actor looking for work, what you’re presented with. And so, there was one animated film a few years ago that I had an opportunity to work on and I just didn’t, I didn’t feel I could do anything with it or I didn’t connect to it at all. But then, when I saw what Chris and the team that Chris has worked with were creating and what their intention was, and as far as entertainment goes and what the story had to say and how beautiful the world that they were creating was, I just remember the first time I met them. It was a no brainer, you know?” Don’t you wonder what film he turned down?
3. During the filming, director Chris Wedge played every character opposite the actors even imitating their voices. According to Amanda, she did not “understand how you (Chris Wedge) have that kind of energy.”
4. Director Chris Wedge worked on the movie for eight years. “The story evolved for a long time. We just have to make it up and make it work and write the characters. And on the page, it’s one thing. And then, when we start to draw it, it’s another thing. It comes to life a little bit more.”
5. William Joyce the author of The Leaf Men on which the movie is based and Chris Wedge are “great friends. ”
During the interview, all three were truly a delight and had an easy rapport answering questions. And for the ladies, when Colin Farrell answers your question, he actually looks you in the eyes and answers with an intensity and seriousness that is both disconcerting and flattering. And yes, he is pretty good looking in person.
And Amanda Seyfried is really, really nice, I told her during the photo taking session how my daughter loved in her in Les Miserables and she told me that she was ten when she first saw Les Miserables. And yes, she is really pretty in person.
