Since Avenue Q opened way back in 2003, I have been dying to see this TONY “TRIPLE CROWN” winner for BEST MUSICAL, BEST SCORE and BEST BOOK and this week, I finally was able to go see the show as part of a blogger night.
For the uninitiated, AVENUE Q is performed by actors holding various puppets representing the lead characters but be forewarned this is no Jim Henson production, kids need not apply.
It tells the story of a recent college grad named PRINCETON who moves into a shabby apartment all the way out on Avenue Q. There, he meets KATE (the girl next door), LUCY (the slut), ROD (the gay Republican), TREKKIE (the pervert) and other colorful types who help PRINCETON finally discover his purpose in life!
This show was quite enjoyable with catchy, somewhat off-color (okay, dirty) and witty songs. Songs like “The Internet is for Porn” and “Everyone is a little Racist” are amazingly catching and will stick with you but funnnyy. The puppets and their human characters do a great job of allowing you to suspend disbelief that the actors are actually holding puppets. I like the story line about finding your purpose in life. The underlying message is that life is not as we expected. My favorite quote “Everything in Life is Only for Now” is so on target and fits the way I try to live my life because let’s face it, life is short.
If you are in for a fun, raunchy and frolicking good time at the theatre, then see Avenue Q. That said, be forewarned that if you are easily offended, this show is not for you. There is cursing, off-color, politically incorrect, some would call crass jokes, and don’t let me forget, puppet sex. Yes, puppet sex.
